Eat Play Diet (A movie review)
Published 1.7.2025: I watched this Eat Play Diet on YouTube a while ago. This movie presents a range of diets introduced and talked about by a variety of so-called experts with a variety of education levels and biases, which are not formally revealed until the end of the show. The biases in several cases are very apparent, particularly in the case of the keto diet. The movie introduces and at least in the case of veganism trashes the diet. No sources are cited or listed, it’s a bunch of people giving their opinions. This movie in the end tells nothing new and breaks no new ground. I don’t know how far it was distributed, but the fact that it’s on Youtube for free might say something.
The movie starts with the standard American diet (SAD) which no one likes. The SAD is easy to diss, and diss it they do. I’m not going to try and defend the version they presented, as I don’t eat that way myself.
2. Mediterranean Diet (most people have nothing bad to say about it, except the keto wench, because, ya know, whole grains are teh ebil carbz.
3. Then they do the keto diet and the keto shill gets her time in the spotlight. She does allow that keto was intended for pediatric epilepsy patients, but tries to claim that there’s been a lot of recent data in favor of the diet. Fortunately, the dietician who liked the Med diet is there to point out that there is NO LONG TERM DATA on keto, and some of the short term data is not positive (Kevin Hall, anyone?)
Keto shill wench claims that glucose and ketones are the two sources of fuel for the body, but ignores the fact that the body prefers (by a LOT) glucose. So much so that if you maintain a keto diet for long enough, the body will eat its own protein to create glucose. (That’s what Hall’s work showed)
Keto is stupid IMNSHO. No one stays on keto for long— or there would be more thin people. Now, in both diet cases they make the point that portion control is key— even the keto shill notes that the fat you burn is supposed to be the fat from your own body… BUT the reason people wind up with diets of 80% fat is that they can’t stay in ketosis… because that IS NOT the body’s preferred state.
And frankly, if you cut back the fat, what you’re talking about is a low carb diet. Which works because if you cut out carbs, most people (at least initially) cut calories. And in the end it’s the number of calories you eat vs the calories you burn.
CICO (Calories In Calories Out) hasn’t yet been mentioned, nor has Taubes' wrong hypothesis
4. Next up are the carnivore fools. And they start with lack of proper nutrients, this was made in 2023, some of the big carnivore names have only recently quit and owned up to the health issues the asinine diet caused.
We can’t eat like our ancestors because we DON’T KNOW what they ate. I do think they were more active than we are (at least in hunter-gatherer times) but I find it impossible to believe that they would pass up ANY type of food. Carbs? Give it here. Meat? Give it here. I doubt they had oil though. Or dairy. But do I think they found a way to eat legumes and grains? Yes, yes I do.
And of COURSE the keto shill tries to say that there’s no evidence against meat. Was Nina Teichholz not available?
5. And then we come to Vegetarian and Vegan diets. It starts with the definition of vegetarian and vegan and even pescatarians. Ethics comes up, and they note that vegan or vegetarian diets are not necessarily healthy. But the same could be said for any diet, Protein comes up. But the fact that there are good ways and bad ways to go vegetarian. I was a BAD vegetarian.
And then, out of nowhere, there’s the keto shill who goes off on seed oils. WHAT A SHILL. I can't stand this woman, and I'm not going to pretend that she says anything relevant or true. Of course she doesn’t think vegans can get protein.
There are ways that vegans can be unhealthy— as with any way of eating. Wow, they are not fans of veganism. Sugar? I don’t think that all vegan foods have sugar in them.
But vegans do often have weaker bones.
They are really focusing on the lack of protein with veganism.— one of the stupidest arguments against eating all plants. There are TONS of natural (not ultra porcessed) sources of plant protein. Oh jeez… plant toxins? That’s a red herring. Cook or process your food and it’s a nonissue.
And now plant based meats come up. And they are processed… the ZOE podcast today was about this. Again with the seed oils
6. Next up is the Elimination Diet. They didn’t spend too much time here. Basically remove something for 2-4 weeks and see if you feel better. Which I don’t think is actually an elimination diet, but maybe it is. Anyway, did focus on how many people don’t realize that dairy is doing a number on them… I certainly didn’t…
7. Then we move on to fasting diets and time restricted or intermittent fasting. Fasting works because people wind up cutting calories…. otherwise, you’re suffering for nothing, Oh ffs… it’s primal? Lots o’woo here… LOL… people fast then gorge (at least in research). People who skip breakfast (the most common way to “fast”) tend to eat more when they do eat. It’s not completely bunk… but it’s not necessary. CICO Calories in and calories out ftw…
Personalized Nutrition? Is this what it’s coming to? So in the end, it’s basically eating whole foods, and even keto does that… So then they have the talking heads intro themselves, and the keto shill is exactly that… a keto shill. Most everyone (but not all) are actually educated in nutrition.
Stella Luna are two of the seed oil people. So in the end, they say it’s individual. What a waste of time…. Would not recommend this movie….
You can tell I was getting annoyed by the end of the movie and my notes were less complete. But the bottom line is don't waste your time.
